This is a trance production tutorial I made
actually it's somekinda for beginners who want to start making trance
well I'm going to speak about the construction of trance music
cuz you know, every instrument can be used in many ways in Music, so piano
in waltz is different from trance piano so you need to know how to use
your vst's in every genre you intend to make..
to start,trance is produced in a tempo between 130 - 160 and a 4/4 beat
now I'd like to think of trance as 5 sections which are:-
1- Drums
2- Bass
3- Melody
4- FX and special sounds
5- Build-up & filling
---------------------------
1- Drums
the most simple drum elements are
(kick - snare & claps - closed hats - open hats)
i'm not gonna talk too much about making the drums
here is an image for a drum pattern in fl studio
you don't really need to stick to this pattern
cuz you have to add your touches too !
sometimes I alternate between 2 patterns of kicks like this
you can give your drums a nice sound by messing with the hihats for example;
fill all the steps of the closed hats
but make sure to adjust the velocity of the hat notes to sound a little humanized
here is how it looks
adjust the levels in the way you want but make sure to give the
down beat the highest level
you can do this manually or choose between some presets in fl
and to get preset levels
you will find "humanizing presets" on the left ,choose between many styles there ..
well , you can add some other drum kits like cowbells , percs and so on
just mess with the these kits and you will get something cool !
I will explain how to use the drums in the "Build-up" section
---------------------------
2- Bass
bass is a very effective sound in trance
if you are gonna continue your music with only drums and melodies etc...
it will never sound clubby or powerful ..
ok in trance music the bass is somekinda different
it's a little uniform and continuous
the bass line is written in such a "rolling" way
let me show you
now that's called a rolling bass line
and the bass notes "do not" meet the kick notes, they are shifted an 8th note
to the right
when you write the bass line "it has" to be in the scale or chord progression of the melody (I will get to that in the melodies section)
for example if your melody plays like this (A -> C -> E -> C -> A)
the bass line should be playing something like that (A - A - A - A - C - etc.)
so you don't put a note like (B) cuz it will be out of tune and sound so wrong !!
of course some variations will be good
here you can find an example of bass variations in my track "Everlasting"
---------------------------
3- Melody
I don't think that there is a "formula" for melody so that you can apply it
but there are some rules I like to follow when writing the melody
a- choose your scale
b- make a chord progression
c- start writing
a- scales
okay ,if you don't know what scales are, here is a short explaination
think of scales as the letters that make your alphabet
if you have the english letters you can write english but you can't write russian
the same, if you have certain 8 notes you can write sad music
and if you have other 8 notes you can write happy music
the main scales are "Minor & Major" scales
Major ==> gives you "happy" feeling"
Minor ==> give you "sad" feeling
here is a picture to understand the difference between the 2 scales
okay , this picture shows C-major and C-minor scale
and it's named after the first note you start with (which is a "C" here)
this note is called the "root"
you will notice that the minor & major are different in only (3 notes)
the (3rd - 6th -7th)
so if you want to make a minor scale out of a major
just lower those 3 notes (a half step down)
and you will get a sad feeling ( see the picture ) :D
I think that trance melodies are often written in Minor scales
b- chord progression
it's a sequence of some chords that repeat themselves during the entire song
try to have not less than 16 bars of repeating chords so that your song doesn't
sound boring, see this
here I used C-minor scale in my chord progression
i wrote 3 notes for every chord
you can write more , as you like
but try to do some variations with it
like introducing the chord before it begins by adding a note at the end of each chord
see this
notice the red notes I added...
well, you can use the chord progression in an Arpeggiate sound, you can use it in
a synth string or a pad , whatever you like.. I used here a pad to sound dreamy a little
the chord progression is part of what is called "the harmony"
c- writing the melody
you gotta be creative in this part :D
but make sure to follow the chord progression you made
cuz this makes it easy for you to write the melody
and what i mean by following the chord progression is that you don't write notes
that do not belong to the chord
for example the first chord is (C - D# - G)
you shouldn't write a melody that all it's notes are (B - D - G#)
cuz this makes your melody out of tune
of course you can add some notes like (D-F-G#) but make it quick
so that the listener doesn't catch it saying "I AM A WRONG NOTE!"
and that's what i discussed in the "BASS section"
in your melodies you can use pluck sounds , arp, piano, etc...
here i used a pluck
see the piano roll of melody
ok I will let you listen to what we did 'till now
(Chord progression Pad + Melody) CLICK HERE
also we can add later very simple notes of melody
but make sure to start playing it after a while
so you don't burn all the melodies you have !
I made something like this
and the bass that i think would fit here would be like
I think this is just basic info for writing melodies and you need to be creative !
---------------------------
4- FX and special sounds
FX and special effects are the sounds that make your track exciting
and they are used to introduce some sounds and do the breaks & drops
there are many forms of FX like
"sweeps - FX kicks - reverse crash - Crowd sounds"
if you listen to my track see me now you will find some nice sweeps and
fx kicks i used in the build-up of the song
I also like to use kicks like that, i don't know what it's called but let's say rolling kicks
just put the notes this way
and adjust the velocity level to be
ascending in such a way
you may also want to use reverse crashes
just add a crash cymbal in a channel
left click it
and check the "reverse" box
see this
---------------------------
5- Build-up & filling
you can get this section by just listening to many tracks
and study how trance is building up
sometimes I start with drums and bass or with FX like in my track "Trance Light"
sometimes I start with melody
but if you start with any of that
just don't put everything you have
start with something simple then build up
for example
when I start with drums and bass i only put (kick + Bass) then with some
sweeps and reverse crash I bring the snare into action then the cymbals and so on
make sure that when you build up you don't repeat your track more than 16 bars without variation
introduce your new sounds after 2 - 4 or 8 bars and not 3 - 5 - 7 bars
this will not sound good for every instrument
ok , I used all of what I wrote above in the tutorial and made this
let's take a listen to the final project

well , I hope that this tutorial was helpful enough
and I really appreciate it if you could post your comments and thoughts
I would also be happy to answer your questions

Really appreciate the effort mate!
I'm struggling with writing melodies that fit with with the rest of my tracks so when you touched on scales you'be pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks!
you are welcome !
pls anyone , if you have a question
or suggest ,pls post it
I would be happy to answer it
Great tutorial man! It really helped me since I'm just getting into trance music.
One question though. When the main melody is playing, I notice that most trance songs start out with only the melody and bass drum, then they add snare, and eventually work their way up to the full on drum beat you posted as well as the melody. This occurs at the end of a rolling snare or kick build-up. I guess its called the peak or something? Anyway, how do you build into this? For example, when should the bass come in, are there more synths in the background besides the melody, etc.
Thanks for your help!
well, since you want to build up from the kick , you can put a 4-kick-pattern with some FX and pads
and repeat for let's say 8 bars then you introduce your bass line and keep playing for 8 or 16 bars (as you like)
then I'd like to break down for 2 bars (((without the kick))) and put a reverse crash or a rolling snare or kick to reach the peak or climax
you can also write a simple synth line before playing the main melody
...
anyway all this is up to you ,I mean you gotta have your style
if you want to stick to something just listen to famous tracks and learn from it..
hi zal let me say great tutorial thank you for taking your time to explain a few things what i would really know is when i comes to remiing a track using midi files how would you structure your bass line & Chords cos im working on a track n0w but its missing something i just dont know what it is here is my email dj_krmak2003@hotmail.com if you could help me out im pretty much tryig to produce Trance & Electro thanks :)
hey, your doing very good job here man thnk you.i'd like to hear from you what i should know before choosing the PAD i can't mix the PAD with the rest of the song and what the rules is to set the PAD notes, thnks again
Nice effort..
good startup tutorial on basic song structure and FL usage
Thx alot mate.. I've been using fruity loops to make trance for some time now, but I never knew any of the theoretical parts of making music. You really helped me understand more.. Do you have any other tutorials?
Nice tutorial. Scrapes the surface but for the beginner it is definately a useful tutorial.
I would just like to mention as well, I personally use Ableton, which of course is better in some ways but not as good in others as fruity.. So I am not sure if fruity can do this / is any good at doing this.. however I would suggest layering a few different baselines to pump it up a little more..
If you are going for that more energetic or thick bassy track then create 1 or 2 basslines with the same Midi notes but different synths. For these basslines you can go with a bit more of a sequence sort of approach - shorter & faster notes, however same notes as the original bassline. Add a few effects to them, and EQ it to cut a bit of the low and high end off..
On top of that you add your low bassline - similar to the one described in your tutorial - very simple, same progression as the other 2 basslines. This time cut all of the high's and mids off so you only have the low frequency..
Then finally make a sharper sound, very very short notes with a very simple sequence. EQ all the low end off, keep half mid and half hi's..
Then you should have a nice warm sounding bassline..
All in all, wicked job with the tutorial. Like the tunes youve put together as well. If you have any questions about what I just typed I can answer them for you. Not stealing your tutorial here, just want to add to it :)
Man, this is the best tutorial I have found. I appreciate your time and effort. I have been listening to trance for many years, but I have recently started trying to create something new. Since I dont have any musical education, I had no idea what to do. Your tutorial put me on a right direction (especially scaling part). Will be looking forward to see new, more complicated tutorials from you...
P.S. I like your trance taste as well. Your songs are real trance, not like the Youtube guys making some cheap sounding rave or eurodance. Credit to you, bro...
20 year old producer from Berlin, germany. Do you have skype, msnmessenger or icq so I can ask you some questions??

i am 22 but have only being using fruity loops for about 3 or 4 month, i am not yet this good as you are. i learn new things all the time :)
your songs are also very good.
is there any ways of having mp3 of these songs? thank you again :)

Really an appereciable effort.i liked it.keep it up.
:)
thanx for the post! really helped me out. I've been mostly making hip hop and DNB and was struggling with getting into making trance, but ur post helped me get down a good structure and tweaks.
Not so good of a tutorial, learn a little bit more about music theory, and it could be better.
Good Job anyway :)
One of the very best FL Studio tuto I have ever read !!
Document (pdf or html) tutorials are IMO much more effective than video tutorial as far as FL Studio is concerned.
One question: in the melody you use the note A. However, A does not belong to the C minor scale. So why use A ?
zal,
I just found your Trance music creation tutorial via a link at digitallydreaming.net, and look forward to gleaning all the knowledge you generously impart. The power of the internet is the incredible shortening of the learning process, for infinite areas, and the creation of great original Trance and PDM (Personal Dance Music) is my new life goal. With the help of selfless mentors like yourself, I'll get there much faster than otherwise would be possible, and will let you hear the outcome of my first effort after following your "tut".

p.s. Music with dinner ISN'T an insult, if you dance in spaghetti!
Hey buddy,
This tutorial is really awesome resource for trance beginners.
I need some help from you. I am a beginner who is exploring on the trance production using Garageband. I love to tweak those soft synths. I'm very much attracted towards Side-Chaining effect in Trance.
I need a FREE AudioUnit for Garageband to create the Side-Chaining effect. Please help me.
Or let me know what is the easiest way to create Side-Chaining using the existing free AudioUnits.
Please Please Please help me.
Without this, I'm really feeling that I'm stuck!!! :-(
Please mail the info to my gmail: mallikarjun.melagiri@gmail.com
Hey, man, thanks! This really helped a lot. I usually write acid house and I'm trying to move into trance some. Thanks. I think you might want to add "eruptions". I don't think that's what they're called, but it's when the sound explodes in volume.
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. I found you tutorial very helpful although I am already playing some of my own stuff.
To those that would like to listen and comment (and also criticize) some of my work, please check it out at www.felipemz.com
Thanks so much for this!!
Before I had big problems with playing any black keys at all, so many of my tracks sounded like different variations of one another. This tutorial REALLY helped me learn some essential things and now I'm pretty happy with the sound I'm making!! :)
what program are you using by the way? right now i am using reason 5 but it is confusing to learn with that program since there are so many details...
Hey Zal,
Nice tutorial, the basics are definately there. I would have added sum stuff, but don't wanna steal your mojo. After the build up, musically it is called a crescendo when the melody and all other elemsnts come together to give that euphoric uplifting feeling. Stephy, I produce trance using reason 5 and have really started to get my head round it, so if ur after sum help, send me an e-mail - kris_cocozza2388@hotmail.com
How can i make my tracks better?
